Nappy Makers is a Scottish family run business located just to the south of Glasgow, Mummy makes the nappies, Daddy makes the dinner and Granddad looks after the teenies (well, that’s the theory!).

At Nappy Makers we have a passion for real nappies, there’s nothing quite beats the “Ahhh” that comes from seeing your resusable cloth nappies hanging out on the line to dry, or that sneaky sniff of fresh air cleanliness as you bring them back in again.

When I had our first baby I bought some cloth nappies and loved (mostly) everything about them, the fit, the look, the feel, the absorbency and the fact that they went in the washing machine and not the bin (we have a worm farm, Gran and Granddad have one too (though Gran and Granddad’s worms all have names, ours don’t and Gran and Granddad’s worms aren’t allowed to come and visit our worms, something about them not ever going home again, which might be connected to Grandpa being a fly fisherman (and a champion retired Scottish Police fly fisherman at that.))) Anyway I digress, suffice to say we like to put dirty cloth nappies in the washing machine rather than plastic pooh filled ones in the bin.

I did discover one teeny tiny drawback when using resusable nappies though and that was the time that they took to dry, forever for the cotton ones and forever and a day for the bamboo ones, of course the bamboo ones had to be my favourite real nappies so the challenge was on and with my 4 month old baby by my side I set about to design a faster drying cloth nappy and the Lovewee™ was born.

My four month old baby is now two and a half and we have another one (he’s still tiny) and to all the people who have helped us along the way, the real nappy ladies, the environmental protection officers, not to mention the many many Mums who took the time to trial and test our nappy, I’d like to say thank you.

Our business has gone from an idea (Nappy Makers was recognised by Scottish Enterprise as having the best business idea in Lanarkshire in 2006) to a reality with not just one Lovewee™ reusable nappy but a whole collection. The innovative design of the Lovewee™ also took us to the finals of the Biggart Baillie Innovators Award in 2007. But we want to be more than just a nappy maker and to give something back in return. I am a Mum who has had the opportunity to work from home, to spend time with my children and organise my working day around their needs. As Nappy Makers grows we want more Mums to be able to do the same and to offer a genuine work from home opportunity (no envelope sticking here!). As Nappy Makers grows even further and world domination of our cloth nappy is just around the corner, we want to be a family friendly employer, with flexible hours, childcare on site and even a bus to collect the not so littlies on the school run. Pie in the sky? Well why not, everyone is allowed to dream.

At Nappy Makers we are Scottish and proud, we live in a beautiful country and we want to do what we can to keep it that way. Where possible we source all our materials locally, our bamboo terry fabric comes from our neighbours in England (they may get it from Italy but at least that’s not as far as China). Our nappies are made in Scotland. We try and consider the environmental impact of everything we do, all Nappy Maker stationary is made from 100% recycled material, our mailing boxes are made from 100% recycled material and can be reused and recycled again. All of our waste paper is recycled, all of our organic waste goes to the worms. (When we get as far as having a family centred environmentally friendly factory it will have a worm farm too). Our energy is supplied by a hydro electric supplier and every day Daddy walks to the train station and takes the train to work (which is so Mummy can have the car, but maybe one of these days we’ll give that up too). But when all is said and done we’re not crunchy or scary, and yes we do even use the odd disposable nappy, we just try and use as little of them as we can.
